The number of people infected was particularly high in the western parts of the country around the capital. Ever since, there have been no major outbreaks.<\/span><\/p>\n Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of diurnal mosquitoes.<\/span><\/p>\n Symptoms include fever, headaches, aching limbs and a skin rash. The symptoms are similar to those of influenza. There is no vaccination against or effective medication for dengue viruses.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Chikungunya<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Chikungunya infections are also transmitted by diurnal mosquitoes and can occur at the same time as dengue in the corresponding regions.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Japanese encephalitis<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Japanese encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain caused by viruses, is transmitted by nocturnal mosquitoes. Pigs and waterfowl are often infected with the virus without getting sick themselves. Humans rarely get infected, but the progression of the disease is often severe and leaves permanent damage or ends fatally. There are no effective drugs against the JE viruses.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Malaria<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Sri Lanka \u201cmalaria-free\u201d in September 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22.3″ custom_padding=”50px|0px|54px|0px|false|false”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”0|0px|27px|0px|false|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″]<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Diarrheal and intestinal diseases<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n As in many southern\/tropical countries, diarrheal diseases are common year-round, caused by the quality of the water, among other things. The tap water does not meet drinking water quality standards, which is why it should only be used boiled or filtered.<\/span><\/p>\n Otherwise, you should make sure to only consume drinks from bottles and cans in their original packaging.<\/span><\/p>\n Only purified drinking water should be used for washing fruit or brushing your teeth. In addition, no raw, uncooked or unpeeled products should be consumed. Make sure that meat, fish and seafood are well cooked.<\/span><\/p>\n To reduce the risk of infection, general hygiene measures such as washing or disinfecting your hands regularly before eating are beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Rabies<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Rabies is a regularly fatal infectious disease caused by viruses transmitted by the saliva of infected animals or humans. Since there are many street dogs and other wild animals in Sri Lanka, the preventive vaccination against rabies is important. You should not do without this reliable protection, even if the probability of getting infected with rabies is rather low.<\/span><\/p>\n Geographical and climatic diseases<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The intensity of the solar radiation due to the location of the tropical island is often extremely underestimated.
